Weather report from February to April 2021 of project

February to April are important months in grain production. Why is this so? In this phase, from BBCH 14 or EC 14, the development of the ear begins inside the plant. A lack of water or nutrients here leads to yield depression due to poor or weak development of the yield organs in the ear.

During this period up to about EC 34/37, depending on how much stress the plant experiences, a natural reduction of ear and flowerlets already takes place.

BBCH or EC, what is it for China:  BBCH-Code (or also: The BBCH scale) provides information about the morphological stage and development of a plant. The abbreviation officially stands for the Biologische Bundesanstalt fuer Land-und Forstwirtschaft, Bundessortenamt und Chemische Industrie (German Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, German Federal Office of Plant Varieties and German Agrochemical Association).  In 1989, this new BBCH code was presented in a joint effort of BASF, Bayer AG, Ciba Geigy AG and Hoechst AG. From 1979 to 1989, the term EC code (Eucarpia scale) was used and is still used today. The numbers 00-100 have not changed. To give some examples:

What stands out when looking at the weather from 2018 to 2021?

Rainfall for the first four months was 154mm and 162mm in 2018 and 2019, respectively. In 2020 and 2021, on the other hand, we only had 145mm and 117mm, respectively. To summarize, they  were relatively wet months in 2018 and 2019, also they were cool, because the sum of daily average temperature was about 100 C0 lower than the years 2020 and 2021. These two years were relatively dry and warm overall.

The question is, could precision irrigation increase the yield potential of winter crops like wheat, barley and rape? And could additionally improve fertilizer efficiency?

The last two years have been good years for possible reduced crop protection. The drier the conditions, the lower the disease incidence. In agriculture, you cannot work according to a standard model. Crop protection must take place as needed, not according to a plan. It is important to understand and apply the concept of the (economic) threshold.

This states that a plant protection measure is only reasonable after a certain level of occurrence of pests, diseases, or weeds, i.e., when the damage to the crop is greater than the cost of the measure. In addition, paying attention to thresholds supports the effectiveness of the agents. It is an important component in resistance prevention because the pathogens are controlled at the right time. If the agent is applied too early, it does not control all pathogens. If, on the other hand, it is applied too late, the pathogen populations have already reproduced too strongly.

In Germany, thresholds are set and recommended for most pests by the plant protection services of the ministries of agriculture.

But the harvest is not yet in storage. May and June are again important months for harvesting and sowing the new crops.

China is known for monsoon rains and we can't change that.

After the harvest there will be a new short weather report.
